Atom Optics and Ultrafast Dynamics: nonlinear interactions in condensed matter physics and atomic physics of light waves, acoustic waves and matter waves, using modern laser techniques (femtosecond light pulses and laser cooling). Examples are Bose-Einstein condensation, quantum-phase transitions of ultracold atoms in optical lattices, nonlinear optics of photonic crystals, and formation of solitons.
