15 PhD studentships and 6 postdoctoral positions in ultra-cold gases / quantum manipulation / optics

The Dodd-Walls Centre is a New Zealand Centre of Research Excellence with world-class researchers working in the areas of Photonics and Quantum Physics. It draws on pioneering research in Quantum Optics lead by Professor Dan Walls along with more recent activities in nonlinear optics, sensing, the control and manipulation of single atoms and Bose Einstein condensates. A key outcome for the Centre is commercialisation of new technology.

The Centre will be launched in January 2015, and we are looking for exceptionally strong researchers to join us. We have 10 postdoctoral fellowships and 15 fully funded PhD positions (scholarship and fees) available starting in 2015.

Postdoctoral candidates should have experience of working in photonics, quantum physics, or a related discipline, and a strong track record of publications. We have research projects in the following areas:


numerical modelling of lasers and optical cavities
mode-locked fibre lasers
optical frequency combs and cavity solitons
Thz devices and applications
optical sensing including optical coherence tomography
nonlinear optics in waveguides
cavity QED
optical rogue waves
laser micromachining

Quantum Physics

manipulation and control of single atoms
quantum computation
Bose-Einstein condensates
multi-component BECs in designer potentials
finite temperature BEC dynamics
quantum dynamics of ultra-cold Bose and Fermi gases
