Postdoctoral Fellow in Theoretical Physics (quantum many-body dynamics of ultra-cold atomic gases, A307-14CF)

Location
Auckland, New Zealand

Description

We have an opening for a fixed-term research position in the theory of quantum many-body dynamics of ultra-cold atomic gases.

Term of Contract: Fixed Term of 2 Years

Position Overview:
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship in theoretical physics of quantum gases. The postdoctoral fellow will work on fundamental aspects of quantum many-body dynamics including nonlinear wave propagation in strongly correlated quantum fluids as well as questions of implementing models relevant to relativistic quantum field theory, cosmology, and non-abelian gauge fields with ultra-cold atomic gases. One of the main research question is how experiments with ultra-cold atomic gases can reveal fundamental insights by quantum simulating the dynamics of a model many-body system that go beyond answers that can be revealed by simulations on conventional computers. The position is funded by the Dodd-Walls Centre for Photonics and Quantum Technology, a national Centre of Research Excellence, and the successful applicant will enjoy access to the facilities and programs of the Centre. Based at the New Zealand Institute for Advanced Study at Massey University’s Auckland campus, the postdoctoral fellow will interact closely with ultra-cold atom theory and experimental groups at the University of Otago, Victoria University of Wellington, and Auckland University. The scientific environment is further distinguished by an active community of cold-atom and quantum optics researchers in Australasia. This position is one of several available in the Dodd-Walls Centre and PhD scholarships are available as well. See details at http://doddwalls.ac.nzs.

Applicants should have a PhD in theoretical physics and publications in high-quality journals. Previous experience with theory of ultra-cold atomic gases, quantum many-body theory, nonlinear dynamics, stochastic field simulations, computational methods, or integrable systems will be a plus. However, we will also consider applicants with a different background.

Applications for this position should be submitted electronically through Massey University’s employment portal jobs.massey.ac.nz and include a cover letter, full CV, and the names of at least three references. Enquiries about this position should be addressed to the project leader Prof Joachim Brand (j.brand@massey.ac.nz).
