PhD Studentship in theoretical physics: Macroscopic quantum dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates

Massey University, Auckland, New Zealand

A PhD fellowship in theoretical physics is available at Massey University in Auckland, New Zealand. As a successful applicant, you will work in the group of Associate Professor Joachim Brand in the field of quantum physics of ultra-cold atoms. The fellowship is part of the project "Icy tornadoes in the quantum world - Josephson Junctions of Bose-Einstein condensates" funded by the Marsden Fund of New Zealand. The goal of the project is to study effects of quantum fluctuations and entanglement generation in the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates. Macroscopic quantum tunneling and the formation of Schrödinger cat states could be produces by Bose-Einstein condensates in analogy to Josephson Junctions of superconductors. Besides studying simple model situations analytically, you will engage in simulation methods based on stochastic field theory. You will be part of an international collaboration with Swinburn University of Technology in Australia. Locally you will be part of the Centre for Theoretical Chemistry and Physics at Massey University (Albany Campus) in Auckland and will benefit from an active research environment with close links to the New Zealand Institute for Advanced Study and an active community of cold-atom and quantum-optics researchers in Australasia. As As a successful applicant, you will have a University degree in physics or a related discipline with an outstanding record in theoretical physics and mathematical subjects of study. You will be determined to acquire and improve both analytical and computational skills and knowledge and apply these to progress fundamental research. The tax-free stipend is expected to be NZ$ 23,000 - 25,000p.a. for three years in addition to covering tuition fees for domestic or international students. Inquiries are welcome and should be addressed to Associate Professor ( If convenient, please include a full CV, a brief statement about previous research experience and photocopies (scans) or transcripts of certificates showing grades achieved during previous university study.
