Postdoc position in ultracold quantum matter

Location
Durham University, UK

Description
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to pursue experimental research in the field of laser cooling and quantum degenerate gases within the Durham Atomic and Molecular Physics group. The position is connected to a European Collaborative Research Project within the Quantum Standards and Metrology (EuroQUASAR) Programme and is focused on developing the application of quantum degenerate gases to precision measurement. The project is funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) and specifically aims to use Bloch oscillations of non-interacting condensate in a 1D optical lattice as a sensitive probe of atomic forces in the vicinity of a surface. The position may commence from 1 September 2009 and is 24 months in duration. Prospective candidates must have a Ph.D. in experimental atomic physics and will be expected to display the initiative and creativity required to lead the direction of existing experiments investigating Bose-Einstein condensates with tunable interactions and to develop the new experimental methods needed to study Bloch oscillations. Experience of magnetic and optical trapping of ultracold atomic gases is therefore highly advantageous. The ability to work in a small team and to assist in the supervision of graduate students is essential. Durham University is one of the UK’s leading centres for atomic, molecular and optical physics research, with a world class research group working in fields covering experimental and theoretical topics ranging from laser cooling and trapping to quantum chaos and molecular astrophysics. The atomic and molecular physics staff in the department of physics numbers 6 faculty, 1 Royal Society University Research Fellow, 1 EPSRC Advanced Research Fellow, 5 post doctoral researchers and 17 Ph.D. students. Strong collaborative links also exist with research groups in the department of chemistry.
